Lot 313		1787 Fugio Cent Newman 18-U Rariy-4 NGC VF Details Bent. A STATES UNITED variety. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate. The surfaces are a bit uneven but not corroded, and there is no verdigris. There is a subtle bend in the planchet, a thin lamination through the base of the sundial over the M in MIND, and another minor planchet fissure that meanders across the first 3 digits of the date. Lot 318		1809/6 C-5 R1 Overdate 9 over Inverted 9 AU58+. The obverse is lustrous chocolate brown and steel with ample mint red showing in protected areas; the reverse is a frosty slightly darker shade of chocolate brown and olive with light bluish steel overtones. The only "defect" is a very thin layer of crud covering the fields on the reverse and dulling the mint luster on that side. The obverse is choice mint state with outstanding luster and eye appeal. Lot 325		1793 Chain Cent Basal State-1. Slightly glossy dark steel and olive brown. The surfaces are covered with fine roughness and there are traces of glue or some similar substance on the obverse. The only notable mark is a rim bruise at the top of the reverse. The date and legends are gone but the outline of the portrait is reasonably clear and the links of the chain are essentially complete. Lot 326		1793 S-8 R3 Wreath Cent, Vine & Bars Edge PCGS Genuine. Sharpness VF20 or better but corroded with specks of greenish verdigris on both sides. The only contact marks worthy of note are a dig on the cheek and a rim bruise right of the bust tip. Chocolate brown and darker olive with some medium brown toning on the reverse. MDS with a diagonal die crack through the center dot on the reverse. The 3 is the only digit in the date that remains visible but the remainder of the legends are complete and easily readable. Lot 328		1793 S-9 R2 Wreath Cent, Vine & Bars Edge G4. Glossy medium chocolate brown delicately mottled with some lighter brown on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth, especially so considering the amount of wear, and there are no notable marks. Basically a choice but heavily worn Wreath Cent. LDS with die cracks and heavy swelling under ERICA. Lot 329		1794 S-25 R3 VG8. Sharpness F15 or better but burnished for an unknown reason because the surfaces appear to have been smooth anyway. Retoned glossy dark olive brown and steel with lighter steel brown toning on the highpoints. MDS with die clashmarks on both sides but no die crack on the reverse. Lot 330		1794 S-65 R1 VG8. Glossy olive brown and chocolate with slightly lighter toning on the devices. The surfaces appear smooth but a glass reveals extremely faint roughness in the fields and protected areas. No verdigris and the only notable marks are a dull scrape at the 94 and a few tiny scratches at the B in LIBERTY. Otherwise the details suggest a slightly higher grade. E-MDS, Breen state V, with a fine die crack down the left side of the second S in STATES and swelling at ICA and inside the wreath. Struck slightly off center to K-1.5. Lot 332		1796 S-81 R3 Liberty Cap F12. Sharpness near VF30 but dark and covered with fine granularity under slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel toning. The only mark is a light diagonal scratch in the field left of the lower curls, and it blends perfectly into the toning. Sharply struck EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks. ONE CENT is fully struck, which is unusual on this variety. In addition the planchet has a diameter of 30.5 millimeters, significantly larger than the normal 28.5mm. Breen mentioned seeing one example with this exact diameter (his large cent encyclopedia, page 273, Remarks section). Sharpness VF25 with a few patches of very light roughness on both sides, strongest in the field before the face, plus some faint hairline scratches on the portrait, strongest down from the earlobe. A few specks of very light verdigris can be found in protected places around the eye. Glossy steel brown and chocolate. Nicely struck LDS, Breen state III, with delicate bulges in the field left of the date and over the bust tip. No low spots. The date and legends are bold and ONE CENT is strong. Lot 344		1796 S-90 R5+ Liberty Cap VG8+. Attractive glossy medium steel brown and light chocolate blending to reddish chocolate in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and the only marks are a couple small rim nicks at the bottom of the reverse plus one more over the T in UNITED. Nicely struck with a strong date and complete legends, although the denominator is relatively weak. Struck with the reverse upset oriented head-to-head rather than head-to-foot (the normal large cent die orientation). This rare variety is usually found in very low grades; this one is clearly above average. The only notable mark is a dull but relatively large rim nick over the first A in AMERICA. Attractive glossy light olive and medium chocolate brown with a small splash of darker chocolate brown toning on the cap. Nicely struck LDS, Breen state VIII, with horizontal waves in the obverse fields. A curved planchet clip affects the dentils under the 796 and the opposing ones over TES in STATES (as struck). The date and legends are all strong. Lot 346		1796 S-103 R4+ LIHERTY Error PCGS graded AG3. Rather glossy medium chocolate with lighter steel brown toning on the devices. No verdigris and the only notable mark is a vertical scratch in the field left of the lower curls. Essentially just a heavily worn cent. The date is easily readable but only the upper half of the digits is still visible, and LIHERTY is complete and clear. About half of the reverse devices are visible, but nothing is strong on that side. Our grade is Fair-2+. Lot 355		1805 S-269 R1 Pointed 1 F12. Nice glossy light olive brown and chocolate. No roughness, only a few trivial marks, including a small rim bruise just right of the F in OF and a small rim nick over that F. MDS. Lot 356		1807 S-274 R2 Small Fraction PCGS graded AU55, CAC Approved. Choice medium steel brown and chocolate with frosty lighter brown and tan faded down from mint color in protected areas, especially on the reverse. No roughness, only minor contact marks including a small tick or flake on the throat and a tiny nick on the truncation over the 0 in the date. There are traces of loose dirt in protected areas around some of the devices on both sides and this looks like a cent that has never been brushed or "improved" in any way. Breen die state III with a couple fine die cracks at STA and minor swelling in that area. The obverse is slightly misaligned to K-9 and the bust tip is softly struck as often seen on this variety. Apparently this is a new discovery of the variety and it is not included in the Noyes or Bland census lists. Our grade is EF40+, close to EF45, and CC#3 for the variety. It is slightly finer than the Reynolds example we sold as lot #306 in our 1/31/2016 sale (PCGS AU53, our grade EF40, sold for $54,050). The other PCGS graded AU55 example (our grade EF45) sold as lot #57 in our 2/12/2017 sale where it brought $61,687.50. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label.
